ManeLine, SP Double, Bionik Brown

2:32 PM / Posted by Q /

I never had the opportunity to meet Bionik Brown and actually never heard of him until I started getting emails about him today. After listening to some of his music on his MySpace page, I feel bad for missing out. Dave Herrera over at Westword got me up to date. Here's what he wrote:

If you were listening to the radio yesterday morning, you know that the rush hour commute was an especially deadly one. "4 motorists killed in crashes on area roads," reads the headline in today's Rocky Mountain News. The brief goes on to list Nathan Woods as being among the fatalities, noting that a section of East Colfax near Harrison Street was closed for over three hours as a result of the head-on collision Brown was involved in. What the item didn't mention, however, is that the 32 year old Woods was also known to many in the local hip-hop scene as Bionik Brown, a respected up-and-coming rapper with a compelling backstory.

For those unfamiliar with Bionik, he came to Denver from New Orleans in search of a new beginning after surviving Hurricane Katrina. Shortly after he moved here, he reached out to me and shared his story, which landed him on my list of artists I'd intended on profiling. Rather than attempting to recount his past in this context, here's Bionik's story, in his words, taken from a note he sent me last year:

Basically I am from New Orleans, Louisiana but lived in Denver briefly as a kid. I was making major noise in the hip hop scene in the South prior to the Hurricane. I had won numerous battles and had a great buzz relating to my recorded works and stage shows. I'd toured with GALACTIC and played shows with Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots and many others. I was working on an album which was going to be released nationally and things were ideal...

Then, Katrina blew through the City. My wife and I evacuated to Alabama and were there for 6 weeks until we were let back into the City. We came home to a City in ruin and our home was still standing but pretty well damaged. We didn't even have electricity so we packed up the dog and some clothes and drove right back to Alabama. When we arrived we knew that we had to leave the City. We were debating where to go and considered Houston, Atlanta, L.A. etc.

For some reason, Denver popped in my head at random. I'd had fond memories as a kid and so we got plane tickets to visit the City. We flew out to Denver, checked in the Hotel and at 3 am the morning after arriving hours before I got word that my Father had died of a heart attack...so we rushed back home for the funeral.

We were confused about what to do but came back to Denver and tried to rebuild our lives. The first few months were hard and I was sick of living, sick of music and sick of everything. I gave up music and really just stepped back from everything. I took 6 months to just heal and in that time I found a few old beat c.d.'s.

Those beats would go on to become what would form my latest album Platinum Thoughts, Aluminum Budget, which was recorded at Studio Lodo here in Denver. The album wasn't intended for release. It was meant to be a healing album, a labor of love of sorts. It wound up being the album that opened the floodgates for me in touring and performing.

I've since traveled extensively and my temporarily stay in Denver has been stretched. Denver is now my second home and the music scene out here has been so welcoming to me that I have to stay longer. This is now my home base for the time being. I credit Denver with revitalizing my
musical sensibilities.

I guess that's me in a big nutshell.

Judging from the number of profile pics and profile names on MySpace that have been altered to memorialize Brown, he will be greatly missed in his second home. (In an eery coincidence, an inscription his personal MySpace page reads, "Bionik Brown: R.I.P. Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes.") -- Dave Herrera

Check out this video of a live performance from Bionik last year:

Man o Man, another Great one lost on earth, but another funky Soul, enterS heaven. To the homie Bionik Brown, who I have built with many of times, but wish I would have known him better, but your words will live forever & your music will carry on...
I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.

REST IN POWER BIG DOG..SHINE YOUR LIGHT FOR THE WORLD TO SEE..

TILL WE MEET AGAIN!!

Ichiban needs to reup at twist....so as of now it is sold out there.

Maneline album will have a special download presale that will come equipped with 3 bonus songs...and after the release party a chance to download the live version.
This should be available next week...so you would just have to hollar at us.

Copywrite.....used to be a fan.
And as much as I appreciate some "get at 'em-battle-esque" lyrics, its hard to take someone that talks that much shit serious after watching scribble videos of them getting their asses handed to them both in battle and with fist.

whats up with the diss to flawless, catch and purpose sp? only one dude touched on it and there was nothing said afterwords, but id like to know the what the deal is, i thought they were boostwell camp.

Comment by Judge on 12:46 AM

Ain't Real, Ain't Right- Nice job here, no real complaints about it. Loved the keys, although I think they were a little too stacatto for the rest of the beat, I don't know what that foot pedal on the right on the piano is called (the right pedal?) but it sort of blends the notes a little bit, I think that effect could make the keys a little darker. Liked both verses, first one was better though, and the choir sounded great. I'd consider even using them during the verses, just a note or two could be really accentuated by their presence. Really good work here.

CO to CO - Real good pairing, SP and Cop, I liked the way you guys sounded together on the track. I wasn't wild about the chorus but verses were both fire. Good beat, hard battle raps, just a fun song to listen to.

As for the dis, I was expecting some ether shit, and I don't know if that's what you were shooting for SP but if it was you didn't really dis'em that hard, in fact I thought it was almost more of a shoutout? I'm not totally clear on what's going on with y'all in that camp, I know you've all come down to the basement before together and wasn't aware of any tension going on but it seems like heads are reading a little too much into this, if it was a dis it certainly wasn't much of one, although if you're gonna says somebody's name in a song, let alone 3 dudes you might as well get it off your chest. That's just my opinion however.

Bionik- Met him once at basementalism, didn't really know the man but definitely enjoyed his music and his passion for it. RIP

Also, Q, from a journalistic standpoint I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around why Dave H would want to defer to the autobiography rather than do a profile in tribute. That's a head scratcher.

Stay up everyone,

-Judge

isolated mind on 11:09 AM

Rest In Peace Bionik Brown. Never got to meet him but I wish that I could have. An amazing talent for sure! I think heaven is taking all the good ones from us this year.

Judge and SP...Thanks for constructively criticizing. The piano was a sample, toned out on the MPC. I don't use keyboards too much anymore. Plus it wouldn't have had the same dark feeling without the sampled chord, as opposed to a keyboard piano sound. If I had a baby grande I woulda flipped that part on there...but that's why we sample I assume. When I put the sample on poly, the equivalent to a sustaining foot pedal, the tone clashed too much. It's give and take sometimes but I was/am more than happy with it.

I'm not so sure that the SP song was a diss track. A reference to upcoming events maybe? Copywrite can spit, but credability is half of what an emcee is. If you speak on things that you can't back up...your credability is shot. Therefore you are left with just weightless lyrics. Nice emcee just hard to believe him...

Good Post Q!
Keep Grindin' CO!

haha, Cats are more concerned if im dissing then to give feedback, did you like the song, my verse, the beat, the chorus(isnt that the point of this)??? Judge you know, if i diss, it will be a DISS, this is not what cats are making it...AT ALL. I was just at flawless crib 3 days ago...Thanks for the critisism, you were the only one that listened with OPEN ears,

AGAIN I DONT MEAN TO SOUND REDUNDANT, BUT DID COPYWRITE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT FIGHTING, OR KILLING, OR HAVING STREET CRED???? Its a song and hes nice on the mic, i left it there...Man i Sound defensive...haha

Have Fun

Comment by Judge on 12:10 PM

You gotta actually do everything you talk about on tracks now? Man if that was a rule 2pac woulda never made it past 2Pacalypse Now. I don't give a good god damn if the MC really sold crack or caught bodies in real life, since most of the time they didn't.

I understand Copywrite hasn't exactly slayed fools in organized battles but he's definitely slayed many tracks and his album and the Cruise Control mixtape still get bumped in my fucked up ride. As for him getting stole on I only knew about that dude IconTheMicKing gettin him at Scribble Jam and Camu and some of the other cats from the Weathermen getting him in Ohio once, both of these were documented events on the internet so I mean take it all with a grain of salt, but I didn't hear about an incident in Colorado? Anyone got the low down?

-Judge

Comment by Mane Rok on 12:23 PM

All the same...if he talking about how nice he is all the time, and this that and a third...well he should be.
Couldnt even do it in his own backyard at SCribble....did he even make it past the prelims??
Wasnt that an early battle where he got beat, talked shit...then got beat??????

Thats how he loses credibility.
Sha Money XL said in an interview he doesn't let his signed acts "battle" of fear of them losing credibility.
SO yeah...in a "keep it real" industry...that is important.

Thats why...even if I like some of 50's songs...I aint never gonna take him or that fool Rick Ross seriously.
They jacked their whole name/back story from real gangsters.
Lame.
And dont bring up Scarface...because that was movie based.

charleyBRAND on 1:08 PM

Judge,
While I can't speak for Dave, he mentioned that he had Bionik Brown slated for a profile sometime later this year or early next. He stated he knew about Bionik and had followed his efforts since his arrival.

I think it's dope that he deferred to the bio provided by Bionik. Thew man sent that to nearly every media outlet across the state & many in the region when he started ramping up his efforts. It's a unique and compelling bio indicative of the work ethic and sheer will to succeed that worked so well! (not that you were suggesting otherwise)

Anyway, Dave stated he would be willing to cover something done in memory of or tribute to Bionik Brown. So, perhaps the Backbeat Story of the ultimate DIY artist is still forthcoming... should the community put forth the effort.

Comment by SpDouble on 1:19 PM

hahahahahahahaha, YOU CANT TAKE ANYONE IN THE "KEEP IT REAL" INDUSTRY SERIOUSLY IF SHIT IS BASED ON WHAT THESES DUDES DO OR HAVE DONE, EXCEPT BISHOP LAMONT, HAHA!!

Copywrite won when it counted at the roc the mic, and got a management deal through roc a fella (the same manager as jdilla's estate)out of it, and as judge said, you have to take internet stories with a grain of salt, camu tao(RIP) didnt fuck copywrite up, IKON Knocked him out one hit. again hes still NICE ON THE MIC. Has anyone heard the joint on the Marco Polo album?? FIRE...

and heres the official story of copy in aspen, lol..

he got jumped in aspen(hahaha) we were all there Sleeping after the show at belly up, in this crazy mansion...Me The Krew, Tonedef, the AK cats, and i wake up to Catch Lungs "they fucked up copywrite hes in the woods and theyre gonna kill him" haha, so we go down stairs and outside through the golf course (keep in mind we're on top of a Fucking mountain) and attempt to look for copy. after about an hour, I say fuck it, we go in and back to sleep, about an hour later cise wakes me up saying they found him, so we go back outside and some millionaire fuck has copy in his car, BEAT THE FUCK UP(goblin status) so we take his stupid ass and drag him back to denver and put him on the next plane home!!! haha....

and the song is STILL DOPE, Fuck it.

My boy E talks alot of street shit, and he will fight, but if i hear him talk about that shit, i know its based on a story and where he comes from, what happened to that??? Tupac killed???????NOBODY. Biggie killed????NOBODY but there wasnt a song where they didnt talk about it, and they are place on the pedastool as the best.

sorry for the book

To me it's like a habitual liar. If you say one thing and do another...I tend not to want to listen. As do the majority of people I would imagine. You don't HAVE to do everything you say on tracks...but one day the shit you say WILL come knocking at your door...or on your face...either way.

As for Biggie and Pac. Sorry to say it...but what they spoke caught up with them too...be it the Feds or somebody else that killed 'em.

SP, the song as a whole was nice. I guess if you get a semi-successful musician, like Copywrite, on a track...it overshadows the track itself.

How does a blog hold one back?

I'm going to CSU-Pueblo this fall, just got out here to my cousins crib.

I had no idea who SP was until I stumbled across this blog this morning. Hell, I had no idea Hip Hop was popping in Colorado. Fools in Colorado are working with Copywrite?!? That's got my interest peaked.

Maneline, I didn't have any idea who they are. Track is sick, I'll be checking for their shit. Hell, I'll be looking for albums by both when I hit up the record store tomorrow.

I have to admit though, seeing artists commenting on blog sites going back and forth with fans seems a little stupid.

Go to any other blog or hip hop forum and see how people talk shit about Lil' Wayne or T-Pain or Rick Ross. I have yet to see them get online and go back and forth.

If you submit your craft to public opinion people have the right to express their opinions about it. No matter how much you disagree with it you need to swallow it and move on.

The next time you release your music and people comment on it in a manner that you don't like. Instead of wasting time and energy making yourself look like a fool (and losing any potential fans)stop and think how you can do something productive to further your career.

Insecurity and success don't mix. Just because a couple people don't like your music, doesn't mean you stop showing your music to people.

I wouldn't know of SP or Maneline without this blog.... now I do. Get some shit in the stores and I'm copping it.

I Miss FreshSites!!!..ThotsSkee! Delores..come back!!..I agree with David Copafeel...

This Blog has become, a 'how to be a critic and form cults of the same folks, talking, hating, loving, and giving feedback to the same 15 people's music on this blog'..

Much love to Q, on taking the risk on running this blog...it takes a lot of heart and passion for the love of our scene and your a master at your writing craft..been following your work since you started SOHH.com..waaay back..shit even before half of these new guys even started rapping. But like the post above, 'How does this site help artists craft'??

Thats dope, that they get a little exposure from the same 25 bloogers who check this site out, but all in all, there seems like more hate, then love. This blog focusing on the Colorado Hip-Hop scene as a whole, and really our scene is waay bigger and other fresher cats that are in our state, then just the same o' people getting shine on here, ...
I know the same folks probably send you music, but I also see this Blog growing and growing, a cool thing that Freshsites did, was they did a lot of word of mouth and I used to see a few flyers on line, to come and check the site out, but they cover more of the graff side of things which was dope, Cause i miss, checking out some dope graff pic's from the city..Shit, I heard about this blog from my krew..so I was hyped to check it out, but fell to disappointment, when I saw all the nonsense posts from no names on here.

But i guess Freshsites had the access to show more and such, since it was a website, and this is only a blog, you can only do so much and cover so much with a blog, plus I bet Q, gets tired of doing updates on here, since all we see is a bunch of no -name fucks, who try and throw salt in the wounds, for petty ass reasons, when the small group of folks who do have a name on here, just wanna come and build..just as fresh sites did..it's was a community of people, who stayed intune, but hence the network was a lot bigger than this one, but within time, hopefully with good feedback, this blog will turn into something huge...

So i guess to expand the network, we should all help with the promoting process for this blog site, since it is a place to check out Colorado Hip-Hop scene, Q maybe you can cover more of a different spectrum of the scene. I saw that you too were frustrated on past post's from people. This is my first time here and i dig it..but looking at past posts, it's the same group of folks, in the music section, and yes the level of the sound of hip-hop has been making major progress, US as a scene, we are sitting still, without no type of advancement, with us as a community..

remember..For the People, By the People...

just some thoughts from

Listen to yourselves man. WAH WAH WAH! "same 25 people, too much hate and criticism, it doesnt help artists at all". How bout this, if you dont like it, then LEAVE. There is no new internet rule saying this is the first page you MUST view before you can browse! We all get mad at the people askin SP if he dissed kats, but we dont say anything to SP about it for even doing it and thus creating a problem on a positive post. "Oh its ok as long as he is really feeling that at the time", hell no. Were already too divided, so lets diss people to bring us closer together?? Pretty dumb. Oh and did I miss the email Q sent out where he said he's only accepting tracks from the same 25 people? NO! Tell your "friends who rap" that they can get on this "one sided" blog too if they get off their ass and send Q their tracks. So now I hope these statements can stop the whining and complaining and you guys can either keep coming, or not.

We just lost another emcee Bionik Brown, doesnt that make you ask yourself, is all this really worth it? No it isnt.

and heres the thing about me dialoging here, i know its mostly fellow musicians, you dont see me on hiphop dx or ughh or thisis50 debating my music, but these are mostly peers/friends/enemies/inbetweens thus, the pointless hate...RIP BIONIK BROWN AND IM DONE WITH THIS TOPIC, PEACE

SP

Anonymous on 6:45 PM

If this blog isn't effecive for you don't use it! If you see no benefit out of it, it's pretty stupid to be posting your music here taking the time out of your day to "dialog" with people you know are only going to give you biased feedback. To be honest it's downright stupid. You are wasting your energy.

Copywrite gets mad love from HipHopGame.com and Ughh. Why don't you contact them and include the Copywrite track (which is fire) on a free mixtape download they can post in their news section? Hell, offer it on this blog. Sure, people may hate...but also they are going to be people that love it and become loyal fans... and 1 loyal fan will do more than 100 haters ever will.

I just found this site four days ago. I've already told at least 10 people about the SP and Manline track on this blog. I immediately searched myspace to see if there were any upcoming shows or albums dropping.

Instead of getting on here, complaining about the status of this site go to hiphopdx, ughh, thisis50 and promote your music there.

Sell a million records... and you'll have a million times more hate from people you have no idea exist. Post a download for a free mixtape at UGHH.com and watch how many people leave threads just to diss your music.

Atmosphere gets clowned hard on Ughh.com and guess what....that's also the place where they sell the most records. They cracked Billboard when 95% of their album sales came from that site where every time there name is mentioned they get ripped to shreds and called wack.

Whatever you focus on expands. Defend your craft to an audience full of haters and they'll only hate you more and convince even more people to hate you. Focus on cultivating a fan base and watch it grow.

And from an outsider's perspective.... no rapper in the state of Colorado has any business focusing on "haters". Y'all ain't big enough, you need more people!

I was pretty impressed with the music included on this post. I wondered why I hadn't heard of anything coming out of Colorado before I stumbled on this.... these comments shine a great big light on the artists mind state.

Arguing in circles with a bunch of people that are doing nothing for you is stupid. Are you relying on your friends/enemies/peers and inbetweens to buy your record? Wouldn't you expect that posting music on a blog full of those people they aren't going to hail you as the next best thing since sliced bread. Wouldn't your enemies and competition post things with the intent to discourage you? And knowing all of this what are you still doing arguing back and forth?

It makes you look dumb.

And look from a labels standpoint. Do you think they want to sign an artist that is going to respond destructively anytime anyone writes or says something critical about them? Fuck no.

And don't pull the Funkmaster Flex or Cipha Soundz is different then some little blog in Colorado. When the stakes are higher any flaw you have will be magnified.

This site exposes a very obvious problem and one that is probably blocking you from being successful... you spend to much time paying attention to your detractors!

Take this jewel and run with it. Or stay in oblivion.

SO....I forgot to mention, and it wasnt on our song title (by the by, thanks for the love on the song all!)

I feel terrible about this, but would like to thank for their participation:
MY Son Micah
The homie Marcio's Daughter
DJ AWHAT!!'s 2 nephews.

Listen close to the end of the track and you can hear the 4 of them singing as well.
Very subtle...but there.

Amazing kids doing amazing things.
