Westword Showcase History, Contact, Six O' Clock, FOE, EMB

9:58 PM / Posted by Q /

When I posted the lineup for this year's Westword Music Showcase last week, somebody said something about the same artists being nominated every year (By the way, The Pirate Signal couldn't do the Showcase, so they were replaced by Umconcious, read the lineup and schedule here). Well, I did a little digging and found that not to be the case. Some of the past nominees and winners were hard to find and I even called Westword to get the info, but they had to go to some underground lair and dig up old issues featuring the nominees, which they definitely wouldn't do for some old hip-hop blog.

The Westword Music Showcase started in 1995, with the sole purpose of celebrating the local music scene. I went back as far as 2000, because that's all I could find, and even in the early 2000's, i could only find a few nominees and just the winner. Ya'll can hate on Westword all you want, but just know that it has been the only MAJOR publication in Colorado to consistently recognize the hip-hop scene in here. Yes, some years the nominees didn't reflect the scene, but at least they tried, which you can't say for the other outlets here.

Anyway, here's what I found (** are the winners):

The funny thing is that groups like Yo! Flaco, The Flobots, Break Mechanics, Future Jazz Project would be put in different categories every year. One year they would be hip-hop, the next year they would be Funk/Soul or Jazz. Just in case you're wondering why certain groups aren't there for a particular year. If anyone knows nominees and winners from the 90's, please post them in the comments.

How about some music?

What do you mean "How about some music?", Q? Don't nobody here like music. FEGETTABOTIT.

Hard Rock:

Tight. It's about time I heard some core synths up in this b*tch. No offense, but I almost felt ripped off! That almost kicks an industrialistic kind of sound. That's a good thing. I'm also stoked about the hook, it's catchy.

Back on My Sh*t:

Flawless, I love your diversity, you have the skills to pump out different styles, that's the sign of true talent.

Overall that's a pretty catchy tune, straight up, good hook, good rhymes, and I'm down with that message, it reminds me of my track Undead and Famous, "hate me now", that's hot.

Yes Q!..Great post, you are a true supporter for our scene, always searching for the truth, and giving us hip-hop heads good insight, keep it commin!

I see from past WestWord nominee's I see that DENT and Manerok have been in the running for the past 3 years, and Mane Reppin w/ Maneline, one of those years.. thats Dope to see people like that, who's names have both been in the mix since the late 90's and to have them both, (DENT and Mane) still be in the mix and hold it down and get recognized
by The WestWord, that says something right there..Props to that!

Can't Hate on no one, who's doing there thing in our scene. Especially people who are staying consistence and on top of their game. Congrats to everyone who is nominated this year.I'll be there in support

I 'm going to go support BoomBox as well, and go peep Dent out w/ Big Wheel Live Band on Tuesday nights @ Apaloosa..man, the vibe is so dope, I fumbled out on a tuesday and found this dope spot on 16th mall, DENT is a True MC who draws everyones attention when he's rockin' and with a live band, I was stoked and had mad fun!

I like this blogsite, alot of people are starting to post comments and such, it's dope!

Hard Rock- I ain't the type of dude to hit up the club, but I could see fools getting crunk to this. F.O.E really has a presence on the track, peaked my interest. Who's Rudeboy? I liked the beat.
